Laser power stabilization via radiation pressure

چکیده

This Letter reports the experimental realization of a novel, to best our knowledge, active power stabilization scheme in which laser fluctuations are sensed via radiation pressure driven motion they induce on movable mirror. The mirror position and its were determined by means weak auxiliary beam Michelson interferometer, formed in-loop sensor feedback control system. sensing technique exploits nondemolition measurement, can result higher sensitivity for than direct, hence destructive, detection. Here we used this new proof-of-concept experiment demonstrate frequency range from 1 Hz 10 kHz, limited at low frequencies thermal noise room temperature.

High-precision laser stabilization via optical cavities

Optical cavities are extremely useful devices in laser-based research. Within the context of precision measurement, they enable tests of the laws that govern the macroscopic structure of the universe, embodied in the search for gravitational waves (Abbott and The LIGO Scientific Collaboration, 2009) (see also Chapter 14). At the other end of the length scale, cavity-stabilized lasers are powerf...

Ultrasound power measurement by pulsed radiation pressure

In a specially designed radiation force balance (RFB), low-frequency pulse modulation of the incident ultrasound allows high-accuracy measurement of time-averaged spatially-integrated ultrasound power radiated into a reflectionless water load. Errors characteristic of force sensors are precluded by operating the RFB as a force comparator, without directly measuring force. Equipped with purpose-...

Use of radiation pressure for measurement of high-power laser emission.

We demonstrate a paradigm in absolute laser radiometry where a laser beam's power can be measured from its radiation pressure. Using an off-the-shelf high-accuracy mass scale, a 530 W Yb-doped fiber laser, and a 92 kW CO(2) laser, we present preliminary results of absolute optical power measurements with inaccuracies of better than 7% to 13%. We find negligible contribution from radiometric (th...

New concepts and results in laser power stabilization

In the recent decade the development of highpower, high-sensitivity photodetectors and low-noise sensing techniques lead to achievable relative power stabilities at the level of 10−9 Hz−1/2 for frequencies between about 10 Hz and 10 kHz. A new power stabilization concept involving the novel optical ac coupling technique complements these high-sensitivity photodetectors. This technique improves ...

Laser power stabilization for second-generation gravitational wave detectors.

We present results on the power stabilization of a Nd:YAG laser in the frequency band from 1 Hz to 100 kHz. High-power, low-noise photodetectors are used in a dc-coupled control loop to achieve relative power fluctuations down to 5 x 10(-9) Hz(-1/2) at 10 Hz and 3.5 x 10(-9) Hz(-1/2) up to several kHz, which is very close to the shot-noise limit for 80 mA of detected photocurrent on each detect...
